Support the Ballet  Capital Campaign

Thanks to the generous support of so many of you, Raising the Barre: The Campaign for Pennsylvania Ballet – the Company’s first-ever Capital Campaign – has been a wonderful success. To date, over 150 generous donors have contributed close to $12 million, 20% over our goal of $10 million, for a variety of artistic initiatives, for a new building, and for an endowment (the Company’s first). This number includes $9.3 million in cash and pledges and $2.67 million in deferred gifts (primarily irrevocable bequests).

Successes include:

  • $2.35 million raised for key artistic projects, notably the creation of our new production of Swan Lake, choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon; the acquisition for our repertoire of significant new works by master choreographers such as Jerome Robbins, Sir Frederick Ashton, George Balanchine, and Twyla Tharp; and the commissioning of new works by young or emerging choreographers such as Matthew Neenan. In all, nine pieces were added to the Company’s repertoire as a result of this Campaign.
  • Other significant artistic achievements were supported by over $3 million in unrestricted cash and pledges. These include the expansion of the Company from 36 to 41 dancers; the development of our training company, Pennsylvania Ballet II, which also plays a central role in our outreach and education efforts; increased touring throughout the state of Pennsylvania; and the Company’s international debut at the Edinburgh International Festival in Scotland in August 2005.
  • $3.6 million raised for endowment (including a $500,000 bequest), a critically important step toward greater financial stability for the Company.
  • The establishment of The Louise H. Reed Repertory Fund, named in honor of Chair Emerita Louise Reed, which provides key funding for the ongoing acquisition of master works and the commissioning of new works.

Originally, the Campaign called for the raising of $2.25 million for a new facility for the Company. This effort foundered when our chosen location fell through. Nevertheless, donors contributed $775,000 toward a new facility (funds which remain restricted for that facility), and we continue to work on finding a suitable space for our Company.
