Fifty years ago, Barbara Weisberger, one of renowned choreographer George Balanchine’s most promising protégés, had an ambitious dream to form a ballet company in Philadelphia. “Well, Barbara, my smart ballerina,” Mr. Balanchine said, “You must do it.” In the summer of 1963, with Ms. Weisberger’s talent and determination and Mr. Balanchine’s encouragement, Pennsylvania Ballet gave its first performance. Nearly 4,000 performances later, here we are celebrating our 50th Anniversary Season and we could not be more proud of the Company at this moment!
We want to share with you an exciting opportunity to help us celebrate this amazing milestone and help ensure the Ballet’s success for the next 50 years and beyond…
Four members of Pennsylvania Ballet’s Board of Trustees have issued a challenge to all of our loyal friends – If the Ballet can raise $3 million in new and increased gifts, Board members will contribute $1 million, raising a combined total of $4 million. This 3 to 1 Board Challenge will help the Ballet institute new programming including free performances in Philadelphia neighborhoods, education programs and scholarships for underserved youth to train at The School of Pennsylvania Ballet, artistic collaborations with other local cultural organizations, and numerous Company premieres at the Academy of Music.
In appreciation for your contribution of $75 or more, we offer to you a wonderful set of benefits, including invitations to donor-only events such as dress rehearsals, receptions & open houses at our Louise Reed Center for Dance, invites to choreographer lectures, and opportunities to watch Company rehearsals!
